The Carpenter’s Tools Reunion and Concert

October 6th - 8th, 2017

Overview of The Carpenter’s Tools  Reunion / Concert

All former members of The Carpenter’s Tools, as well as their family and friends, are invited to The Carpenter’s Tools Reunion / Concert which is being held the weekend of October 7th and 8th at Grace Fellowship Evangelical Free Church in Milford, New Jersey.  The main purpose for this event is to bring as many former members, families and friends back together for a great time of catching up, sharing memories, and meeting others who were a part of this ministry which was active from 1974-1991.

We will first get together at the church on Friday evening, October 6th, at 7:00 p.m. for our first rehearsal with all participants.  We will then have a picnic back at the church Saturday at noon.  Then around 4:00 we will hold another rehearsal.  We will do a final sound check on Sunday afternoon and then give a 60-90 minute reunion concert at Sunday Night aLive at which time we will recreate as best we can a sample of the music we did in each of the eras using the original members.

On this web site we are continuing to add recordings of The Carpenter’s Tools that we had either recorded on our own in someone’s house or at a live event.  Some of the songs were used over a long period so there will be more recordings for these.  We are also adding photos, videos, sound bites and other memorabilia to this web site.  Anything anyone else has to contribute would be most appreciated.

There were a total of 23 individuals who at one or another were full-time members of The Carpenter’s Tools.  (see Member Stats).  We have 16 former members who will join us and for the picnic and participate in the concert.

For now this web site will serve as your resource for preparing for the weekend.  If you notice any incorrect information or a link that does not work, please let me know because I want to be accurate.  Eventually this will be a memorial site to the ministry that God allowed each of one us to be a part of.  Please feel free to share it with anyone who may be interested.  Since my son Danny is hosting this site, the web address is simply http://buff.andresen.org

For more information feel free to contact Buff at 484-635-5553  e-mail: buff@andresen.org

Tentative Song List for Concert

Below is a list of songs for our reunion concert.  We have plenty, so if one or two of them aren’t coming together we are still fine.
You can listen to original recordings for those songs by clicking on the link.  Each participant is color coded so each of you can look
down through the list to see what you are doing and when.  My intent is that if you participated in any song, you should be up there.
So if I missed anyone, please let me know.

Notes:

mel - melody, lh - (low harmony), mh - (mid harmony), hh - high harmony, (A) - acoustic guitar, (E) - electric guitar, (B) bass guitar,
(P) piano, (D) drums, (BJ) banjo, (T) trombone, (TR) trumpet  Any * means that person has a solo in the song.

* The three Love Song songs will be part of a medley, i.e. we’re doing the 3 songs in their entirety.  See the songbook to see the arrangement.

David - I included banjo for all of the songs that had a banjo.  I don't expect you to play banjo on all of these - pick out the ones you feel you can and want to do.

Putter - I have put you down for a lot of bass.  You will need to go over the songs with the recordings and let me know if you want me
to play any of them.  Note that "Hey, I'm a Believer Now" has a bass solo for the intro and first verse.  I'm pretty sure we lowered the key
on that song, so check the song book.  Also I don't have you listed for mandolin, but I would like you to play it.  Just let me know which
songs you can play mandolin, and I will do the bass for those.

Annelle - perhaps you could play the strings part on "Pierce My Ear".

All - This list is getting close, but that doesn't mean there may a song you sang on that I didn't include (let me know) or one I have you
down for that you don't feel comfortable doing (let me know).  Also don't be too concerned about what harmony I show.  Sing whatever you know.

"Keep it On Goin'"  - I know not everyone did this acapella song, but listen to it and see if you can't sing one of the harmony parts.
It would be neat if we could all do it. I have put ? for those who aren’t scheduled to sing this one, but it would be great if you did.

Also anyone who sang or can sing "Pierce My Ear" is welcome to join us for that one.  Again, just let me know.

What’s New

For the time being, this will be covered in my Weekly Update.

Member Bios and / or Photos

Click here to see Bio Updates for:  Putter and Linda Cox, Bill and Beverly Charles, Ray and Jean Oostdyk, Buff and Judy Andresen, Mark and Falinda Farley (looking forward to hearing from more of you – hopefully all of you)

Song MP3 Files

Click here for a listing of Tool songs by era.  I am working on a list of all the songs by era including a link to what I think is the best recording.  For songs that we have multiple recordings, I am adding a link that will allow you to listen to as many of what was recorded as you would like.  Although many of these recordings are poor quality and were made from the audience during a concert, they may bring back some memories.

Music Sheets

Songbook.  This file (available in PDF and Word) has the music (words and chords) for the songs we weill be doing.  This is what our Praise Team calls the Bufferized version.  I don’t expect you to remember all (or any) of the music, so we will be using these sheets at the concert.

A Tribute to Barry Friedfeld

Barry Friedfeld was a member of the Tools for over 5 years, which ranks him as number 6 in longevity.  Much to our surprise and sadness, we learned that Barry went home to be with the Lord on April 7, 2017.

Click here for our small tribute to this giant of a man.

Engagements

In our 17 years, The Carpenter’s Tools performed on a little over 400 occasions.  Click here for a listing.

I found video footage (when video cameras had no sound) that includes The Tools at WBYO’s Harvest of Talent, Trip to Ken Freno’s parents, Picnic at Linda & Putter’s, Photo shoot in Clinton, Picnic at Buff and Judy’s, and a picnic at Bill and Bev’s.  Clicking on any of these should bring it up on your computer.

Photos

As time permits, I will be adding many photos.  I will be organizing these by year (sometimes it’s a guess).  I will also include a section each week called Photos Added This Past Week so you may just look at new pictures.  Click here to see the Photo Menu.

Through the Years in Photos

Only Ron Habegger, an original Tool who was only in the group for six months, is not shown in at least one of these photos.

In the summer of 1975, we took some black and white publicity photos at the museum
in Clinton.  From left to right are Dave Alleger, Bill Charles, Buff Andresen, Ray Oosdyk
and Ken Freno.  Buff and Ken were the co-founders of The Carpenter’s Tools.

I believe this photo was taken in May 1976 at Freeport Gospel Tabernacle, where Ken’s
father was the pastor.  Pictured from left to right are Mark Farley, Ray Oosdyk,  Bill Charles,
Ken Freno and Buff Andresen.  Mark was the first drummer for the Tools, and this was both
his and Ken’s last engagement with the group.

This photo was taken in June 1978 at a wedding we played for.  In the front are Ray Oostdyk
and Bill Charles. Standing in the back are Buff Andresen, Putter Cox, Nick Antonow and
Dave Sisco. During the 17 years, the Tools played for 14 weddings, including weddings
for members Ray Oostdyk who married Jean Sisco and Dave Alleger who married Bonnie
Eastman.

This early 1982 photo shows from left to right: Ed Hanft, Ray Oostdyk, Bill Charles,
Annelle Cahill, Kathy Kutzman, Dave Sisco, Buff Andresen and Barry Friedfeld.  Annelle
was the fist member to break the gender barrier.  She joined the group in October 1980
as our first pianist, and then Kathy joined as our first female vocalist in August 1981.

A year later (1983) we had a few changes in personnel. From left to right are Jack Shoemaker,
Ray Oostdyk, Jim Nelligan, Barry Friedfeld, Kathy Kutzman, Buff Andresen, Bill Charles
and Bob Cregar.

Unfortunately this is the best photo I have of this particular group.  It was taken in
May 1984 at the Riegelsville United Church of Christ. From left to right are Bette Mayers
(at piano),  Buff Andresen, Barry Friedfeld, Kathy Kutzman, Jack Shoemaker, Ray Oostdyk,
Bill Charles and Joe Hafner.

In 1986 The Carpenter’s Tools were restructured. Pictured from left to right are Dave Sisco,
Buff Andresen, Kathy Kutzman, Beth and Phil Crompton, and Liz and Darrell Neff.  Judy
Andresen (not pictured) ran the sound.

This last photo was taken in the Fall of 1987.  Phil and Beth Crompton and Buff Andresen
(Judy still ran the sound) were the last members of the Tools.  Around this time Phil and Beth
began a family with the birth of their first child, and Buff and Judy helped birth a new church,
Grace Fellowship E.F.C. the same church where we will be holding our reunion.
