The age is very difficult to read in the 1870 census, so I am going with the 1880 census even though it is also hard to read. There are two women with similar names and birthdates (1853). I believe the correct set of parents are Stephen Miller and Susan Cripe, which I found on another family tree. This family lived in Elkhart. In addition, these parents were both born in Ohio, which is what is listed on all of the censuses I found for Melinda. Previously I had her parents listed as John Miller and Sally A. Richardson. She is usually listed as “Malinda” which matches what is on the hand written genealogy. However these parents not both born in Ohio.

I believe that for some inexplicable reason,
this person was listed as “Betsy” Miller in the 1880 census with a wrong
age. The children are usually listed in
order of their birth, and “Betsy” came at the end. Although it looks like 20, I believe she was
approximately 10. If she was a different
child, it would be strange that this is the only census she appeared in and the
Polly did not appear in this one. This
also solves the mystery of one too many children for Susan Anna (Miller)
Cripe. She did have 13 in all, two of
whom had died by 1900.

* I am fairly certain that this is the son of Stephen and Susan Miller. In this census, he is listed living next to his brother Eli. Supposedly Samuel died this same year. However, I did find a family tree which had the son of Stephen and Susan listed as Samuel J. Miller (1846-1868). Before he died he had two children, Jacob I Miller and Samuel A Miller. If this is true, then the 1880 U.S. Census I show is for someone else. Another tree showed Samuel J. Miller (1846-1880).
He is listed in 10 other family trees on ancestry.com, but none of them have any other information on him. I’m not sure where I got the 1880 death date, but that would make him 1 of the 2 deceased children in the 1900 census for Susan Cripe; however I should still be able to find him in an 1870 census.
