Anderson, Alvilda

My 1st cousin 2x removed (3.125) - tree; daughter of Fred Anderson and Anna (Anderson) Olson.

Birth: Nov 1879 in Norway
Death: 1962 in Muskegon, Muskegon, MI
Marriage: Never married
Immigrated: 1882-1885 note: each census lists a different year

Although I have not been able to find her, Louis Andresen supposedly had a sister named Alvilda.  Perhaps Alvilda Anderson was named after her.  She herself never married, and on her gravestone was written “Aunt Alvilda Anderson”.

1900 U.S. Census Summary *                        1910 U.S. Census Summary **

1920 U.S. Census Summary **

* In the 1900 census, it appears that Alvilda (20) and her sister Martha (18) were living with Louis Olson and his family in Michigan City.  He was most likely the brother of their mother Anna (Andresen) Olson who had recently died (~1899).  Anna had been raised in Michigan City.  Interestingly another daughter, Louise, was living with Fred’s brother, Louis Andresen, in Chicago for this census.

** In the 1910 census, Alvilda is living with two of her sisters, Martha and Annie, along with Martha’s son Martin Olson.  She is listed as the head of the household which was located at 384 Grand Avenue.

Find-a-Grave Snapshot – listed as Aunt Alvilda Anderson (1879-1962); burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Muskegon, Muskegon, MI.

Anderson, Andrew

My 2nd great grandfather (6.250) - tree; husband of Anna (Anderson) Johnson; father of Fred Anderson, Alvilda (Thompson) Andresen and Louis M. Andresen.

Birth: Unknown
Death: Unknown
Marriage: Unknown

I’m not really at all sure yet what to call him.  On Fred Anderson’s death certificate he is listed as Andrew (possibly Andreas) Anderson.  Fred’s brother, my great grandfather, gave us our surname of Andresen.  I have reason to believe that his name on some of the Norwegian documents appears as Andreas Olsen.

My only knowledge of him so far is that he mentioned in Fred Anderson’s Death Certificate.  I believe that his name in Norway may have been Andreas Olsen because it appears to be that on a number of Norwegian documents mentioning Louis.

Anderson, Anna F. (Robarge)

My 1st cousin 2x removed (3.125) - tree; wife of David Benjamin Robarge; mother of infant son (4/6/11), Vernon B. 1880 U.S. Census  Summary *

* I’m not certain that this is our Fred Anderson.  This person was born in Norway, and he is listed as a boarder living with the Johnson family.  It also shows that his occupation was a saw mill worker which fits into his supposed logging industry in New Hampshire.  Since he was 19 when this census was taken and he was married at 19, it appears that he was living perhaps a cousin (last name Johnson which was his mother’s maiden name).

Find-a-Grave Snapshot – listed as Fred Anderson, birth: unknown; death: 3/19/08; burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Muskegon, Muskegon, MI, plot 1-26-13.

Obituary – a well known Norwegian-American resident; hung himself in his home at 338 Southern Avenue, Muskegon, MI; his daughter Louise found him; probably despondent over his recent heavy indulging in intoxicants; another daughter: Martha Olson discovered he was missing; 51 years old (birth~1857); born in Christiana, Norway; immigrated to the U.S. 25 years ago (~1883); has been a resident of Muskegon for 25 years; wife died 9 years before (~1899); survived by four daughters: Mrs. Martha Olson, Miss Alvilda Anderson, Miss Louise Anderson and Miss Anna Anderson as well as a brother and sister living in Indiana.

Note: Fred’s obituary states that he had been a resident of Michigan City for 25 years; however the obituary for his daughter Louise (she died one year after Fred) says that she had moved to Muskegon from Michigan City 9 years earler.  Perhaps because of her tuberculosis she had lived with other relatives, including Louis Andresen (she appears on his 1900 U.S. Census).

Death Certificate – listed as Fred Anderson; birth: 6/12/1857; widower; 19 years old when he was married; parent of 8 children, 4 of which were living; born in Norway: father: Andrew Anderson who was born in Norway; mother: Anna Johnson who was born in Norway; occupation: laborer; date of death: 3/19/1908; cause of death: hanging himself – no inquest.

Anderson, Louise M.

My 1st cousin 2x removed (3.125) - tree; daughter of Fred Anderson and Anna (Anderson) Olson.

Birth: 9/2/1886 in Indiana or New Hampshire *
Death: Unknown  4/10/1909 according to death certificate
Marriage: Never married

* 1900 Census shows March 1886 in “North Hampshire”; her death certificate shows 9/2/1886 in Indiana.  Notes from my Aunt Evelyn indicate that the Andresen brothers worked in New Hampshire for a while before moving west, so either state is possible.

Anderson, Martha E. (Olsen)

My 1st cousin 2x removed (3.125) - tree; wife of Charles Olaf Olsen, mother of Martin C. Olsen and 3 other children who died before her own death; daughter of Fred Anderson and Anna (Anderson) Olson.

Birth: 8/17/1881
Death: 4/24/1910 in Muskegon, Muskegon, MI
Marriage: Unknown – we do know that she was a widow

It is interesting that Olsen was Martha’s married name and Olson was her mother’s maiden name.

1900 U.S. Census Summary *                        1910 U.S. Census Summary **

* In the 1900 census, it appears that Martha (18) and her sister Alvilda (20) were living with Louis Olson and his family in Michigan City.  He was most likely the brother of their mother Anna (Anderson) Olson who had recently died (~1899).  Anna had been raised in Michigan City.  Interestingly another daughter, Louise, was living with Fred’s brother, Louis Andresen, in Chicago for this census.

** In the 1910 Census Martha is living with her sister Alvilda (head of household), her sister Anna, and her son, Martin.  The previous year her sister Louise died in this same residence, which was described as Martha’s home.  Sometime between 1900 and 1910 she was married, but to date I don’t know his first name.  She also died this year, and on her death certificate I learned that she was the mother of 4 children, 1 of whom was still lving.

1909-04-12 – Her sister Louise dies of tuberculosis in Martha’s home located at 384 Grand Avenue.

RootsWeb from Allyn Beekman – listing for son Martin Carl Olsen; born 6/22/1902 in Michigan City, IN; died 7/6/1990  in Muskegon, Muskegon, MI; burial: Sunrise Mausoleum, Muskegon, Michigan; SSN: 367-10-5186; church affiliation: Methodist; father: Charles Olaf Olsen, born in Norway; mother: Martha Andresen, born in Norway; married to Gertrude Beekman who was born on 4/28/1901 in Grand Haven, Ottawa, MI.

Obituary – listed as Margaret Olsen; death date: 4/24/1910; cause of death: tuberculosis; address: 384 Grand Avenue; age at death: 30 puts her birth at 1881; survived by one son and two sisters. Note: this was tough to find because her name is incorrect.  However since the date and address are correct, there is no doubt that this is her obituary.  Note the left side of this column is whited out so only 2/3 of the column can be seen.

Death Certificate OnlineCopy – listed as Martha Olson of 384 Grand Ave., Muskegon, MI; birth: 8/17/1881 in Norway; death: 4/24/1910; married at the age of 18; widow; mother of 4, 1 of which was living; father: Fred Anderson who was born in Norway; mother: Anna Olson who was born in Norway; occupation: housewife; cause of death: pulmonary tuberculosis same cause as sister Louise who had died the year before; buried in Oakwood Cemetery on 4/27/1910; information verified by Vilda Anderson.

So far I have not been able to find out anything about this person.  I have been told that Louis Andresen had two brothers, one of whom he accidently killed while wrestling.  I found one article that referenced a visit to Louis Andresen who was living in Elkhart by his brother Conrad Andresen from Chicago.  The most likely explanation is that his visitor  was actually his brother-in-law, Conrad Magnuson, who was married to his wife’s sister.  It is not uncommon for newspapers to totally mess up the facts.  This would also explain the reference to him being a well-known athlete in the Chicago area.

Notes from Dad – He thinks Louis sold out his part of Elkhart Brass to Bunn Hansen and with the profit started Elkhart Screw Products for Harold. I believe Juilie said she didn’t think that was accuate. Harold had worked at Jessens (another machine shop).  He partnered with Hugo Havlish to start Elkhart Screw Prodcucts.  Harold ran the office and Hugo ran the shop in the middle 30’s.

Elkhart Truth Obituary Index  birth: 11/19/1906, death: 1/9/1948

“Uncle Harold had a huge truck load of cinders delivered to make a driveway down the north side of my lot. He also helped with his truck to deliver the chimney blocks and watched me build the chimney. My folks were so opposed to my marriage that my Dad never helped me a bit nor even stopped by to see how I was doing. That all changed when you were born!”  E-mail from Dad on 7/21/2012

Other notes from Dad: Harold was crippled with polio before he and Aunt Evelyn got married.  Her parents, the Martin’s, were not very happy about their marriage.  He was a bookkeeper for Elkhart Brass, but he went with Hugo Havlish and formed Elkhart Screw Products.  When Harold died, they sold to Arbogast.

Notes from Dad: Louis and his two brothers came from Osolo, Norway on a boat to the United States.  Penny mentioned that Aunt Evelyn told her that they had to stay in the steerage part of the ship.  Upon arriving in the United States, they worked for a while in New Hampshire in the logging industry.  Later they moved west to Chicago, where Louis owned a deli.  One of his brothers was Frederick (Fritzchoff in Norway), who moved to Michigan.  I now believe that he went by the name of Fred Anderson who lived in Muskegon.  Louis accidentally killed one of his brothers while they were wrestling.  I’m not sure which one it was.

Louis had a sister named Alvilda.  He and Inga moved to Elkhart ~1900 with Bunn Hansen to start Elkhart Brass, a fire extinguisher company.  Ray and Ken Kiefer started a bushing business, and they did business with Elkhart Brass.  Ray Kiefer’s son, Cindy’s brother, got a good job with them.  Later Bunn bought him out.

Louis wanted to have a farm, so at one point he switched houses with Aunt Evelyn’s parents.  Aunt Evelyn sold produce at the farm, and Dad can remember a big cash register.

Note: Louis moved to Elkhart sometime between 1900 (he is included in a census in Chicago and in 1910 he was living at 1128 Cassopolis Street according to the Elkhart Directory.  If the Andresen who had a visit from his brother Conrad was our Louis, he moved to Elkhart around 1903 “a couple of years before the visit” according to the article.

There was a Louis Anderson who lived in Elkhart on State Street at least between 1900-1910.  He and his wife, Itha, lived on State Street.  He was born in April 1880.  I have found many Louis Anderson articles which referred to my great grandfather who lived on 1128 Cassopolis Street in Elkhart.  I am not certain yet if there was another Louis Anderson who lived on Cassopolis Street.  He was a brakeman for the railroad. I also found a Louis Andersen (58) who lived at 422 St. Joe Street in 1930 with his daughter Alice Walker,

Other newspaper articles give evidence that he was married to someone else as late as 1908 and the 1910 census confirms he was still married to Ora.  His wife visited her parents in late 1908.  However the 1920 Census shows that he was married to Emma and that on 12/12/1922 his wife’s father, Harvey Wheaton of Angola, visited his daughter.  So Ora must have died and Elmer remarried sometime between 1911 and 1920.

1892-06-23 Indian Marriage Collection – listed as Samuel Nichols; spouse: Emma Wheaton; marriage date: 6/23/1892 in Steuben County, IN.

Elkhart Truth Obituary Search – Birth 10/6/1872, 8/12/50, Maiden name Wheaton. Lists her name as Emma Jean (Wheaton) Hess

Visit from father Harvey Wheaton Mrs. Elmer Hess and her sister Mrs. Oscar Conde were visited by their father.

Daughter Beulah’s Wedding Article – listed as Mrs. Elmer Hess; however daughter Beulah’s maiden name was Nichols.  So Mrs. Elmer Hess must be the same as Emma Jane Hess buried next to Beulah with (mother) written on the gravestone.  Evidently Emma Jane’s first husband (father of Beulah) must have had the last name of Nichols, and her second husband must have been Elmer Hess.

Timeline: Born 1872, visited by father in 1922, living with Elmer Hess in 1940 census, died in 1950.

Other newspaper articles give evidence that Elmer was married to someone else as late as 1908 and the 1910 census confirms he was still married to Ora.  His wife visited her parents in late 1908.  However the 1920 Census shows that he was married to Emma and that on 12/12/1922 her father, Harvey Wheaton of Angola, visited both of his daughters.  Emma’s sister was living with Elmer and Emma according to the 1920 U.S. Census so Ora must have died and Elmer remarried Emma sometime between 1911 and 1920.

Gravestone – listed as Emma Jane Hess; birth: 10/6/1872; death: 8/12/1950; mother.
